Almost any light can compete with the sun. Its just a matter of the distance form the light to the subject.So if you dont need full body shots even a flash gun can do the trick.
Another method is to change the background in post. Example here with strong backlights and a new background. They are shot one by one so everyone has the same light. Image is smudged for more cartoon effect.

The photo was taken early in the evening, For this shot i was using speedlights so they wouldn't be powerful enough to shoot in the middle of the day. I used a Nikon sb900 in a lastolite ezybox (1/2 power), and 2 bare Metz 48's (full power).

I also darkened the sky slightly in photoshop as i thought it was a bit too bright (see before/after)

Next time i do a shoot I'll take a picture of the setup and post it

Thx Pelle Wow your work ist amazing! I like it! Ive seen your Portfolio.
Im so far away from you with my pictures but i work many times in the night to getting better! I use PS about 1 Year (only 2 to 4 hours in the night) and Photograf 1 and a half Year.
Im on the way i think.
Im learn much from Calvin as a Member of his Community.
Here are many Professionals like you and i can learn about different Technics to find my own Style. Did you use the smudge tool? And how did you use this?
Thanx once more!
Martin (sorry for the bad english)

Great Job Fadewood youre on the right way i think!
I take more than one look at your second Picture. First im looking on the left legs (damaged trousers) it looks like a mask and i see the Background...but i look once more and i have see whats going on.

Haha thank you TimeActor! I was using two calumet travelites on the sides of him and an AB800 with reflector for fill. I probably should of moved the fill closer to fill in some dark areas.. but all in all the dark areas kinda came out sweet/twilight feel. I'll post a behind the scenes shot for you!

Fade if you want even a more DH effect. you will need a Key and Fill re: Dave uses a softbox and the ringflash for fill. SO you are one light short of getting the proper lighting for the effect.
Just thought you may want to know. In your particular shot you could have used the sun as the right kicker another for the left kicker and then a softbox and another for fill.
The fill is what also makes tha sparkle in the eye...:+}
Hope that helps when you go out on your next shoot.
Snook
P.S. if you had a lot of patence you could have used a mirror for the other kicker and then had an extra light for something else...:+}
That would be the "green" way of shooting and not wasting energy....LOL

Haha damn right. Every shoot I do I end up doing something different with the lights.. so I'll take your word for it. Ive got the ringflash and a few softboxes, i'll do something with those next round.

Re: The demystification of dave hill! let's all he

Thx Fade for "behind the scene"!
Dave use always his ringflash in front of the subjects...this could be the key...a shadowless capture. But your Lightset is even good and i like the "twilight" feel and the colors! Your Postprocessing is also very good!
Did you use PWL directly in the image or a grey layer with dodge & burn or curve layers?
Cheers
Martin
