Re: The demystification of dave hill! let's all he

Hey guys, I have been looking at his behind the scenes videos and it makes a helluva difference to demystifying it

I know that it's 'Retouch Pro' not 'Lighting Pro' but... anyone that makes a point of starting with the light is onto something for sure. His videos almost reveal everything you need to know, because as far as retouching goes, the light is half the battle to begin with.

Here is something I tried recently after watching his videos:

Composite

and:

On location

The composite was my first attempt at this style actually and the second was shot on location with similar lighting.

It's a three light set-up but as far as retouching goes, the backgrounds were processed differently to the subject. The composite bg came from a single raw file with a little bit of blending mode and fill light techniques that Calvin Hollywood teaches on Youtube (awesome video) and the subject looked pretty damn close except for D&B.

The second image had a similar fill light/overlay blending technique used, but the colours were changed using a simple mask to ensure complete control. The subject here is the most interesting thing when it comes to the 'Hill Look' because although the processing is IMO wrong for this image, I got to practice retouching the skin with D&B after the fill light/overlay blending.

I think those steps really need some hard work and a long process of trial and error, but it feels like one step closer to discovering something really awesome! (eventually haha)

Hope it helps a little bit too

Re: The demystification of dave hill! let's all he

Hello, to all people who have suffered trough the looooooooooong journey reading the demystification of dave hill thread!
First of all I want to apologize! It was NEVER in my intention that this thread will get this big and really drown in all the replies! Many people have sent in their ideas, pictures, tips and tricks...THANK YOU for that. I haven't been here for a while, I was shocked to see how many people have viewed and replied this...

Hopefully people get their answers on some of the questions they have regarding the DH technique...

Good luck to all who read page 1 trough 74 :P

Gerry

Glad you can use it as a baseline for experimentation. There's much flexibility in the sequence of steps. Great first pass shots. Keep up the great work!
