| | | Re: The demystification of dave hill! let's all he I was obviously joking about the lighting...
Also That is not HDR probably..Does not look like it.
I was referring to a lot of his other shot's where he has composited a whole new background...
As soon as I see that before and after together it screams Lucis even though he does not use it.. Little doses of lucis and smoothing it out and then some more will get you close enough for sure
Or doing the Lightroom trick but in steps.
Lightroom and the contrast mask are getting at the same results. Just Contrast masking is more controlled and precise.
Shadow and Highlights is trying to do the same also.
Lifting shadows to give in others words impossible lighting scenario. SO it tricks the mind a little..

I used it every time I open an image to make sure the skin tones are nice before I work then I check after I am done retouching to make sure they do shift too much.
Maybe Mtmm will ring in an help out... I seriously doubt it. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...essage=6638682 http://www.planetphotoshop.com/forum...ead.php?p=5043
I did a google and they showed up right away.. many
I learned my from instructional videos by eddie tapp and the such...:+}
you can also use threshold to find lightest and darkest points in an image and then you can make sure there is no color cast either to the image by making sure the whites are 245 245 245 unless you want to clip at 250 250 250...

You can tell he was still finding his style then.
Having said that, i worked on the top half trying to match the bottom as
quickly as i could. I did NO localized adjustments such as d&b etc so i realize
some guys faces are too dark etc. It could be easily fixed though.
I did this with 4 layers in about 1-2mins. Mainly to show i don't think his
earlier work is as refined as what he does now. Also remember this
was done on the tiny jpg posted above. I still think it's close in the overall
look though. Check it out here.
No lucis but two of the layers were high pass at various settings.
One was a slight desat. The first one i did 'enabled' the look for this image.
Snook, if you wanna know, i WILL tell you. Haha. |

It's a really cool website too, they interview one of my favorite photogs, Erwin Olaf. |

| | | Re: The demystification of dave hill! let's all he Looks good captain..
Some may be confused here, but I really could care o less about the dave hill look..
I am always interested in how people do things, not to copy but to learn and be able to pull it out of the bag o tricks.
I know how to get close enough.
But I have several retouchers I use that could do it ina second if needed.
I did this look like 5-6 years ago.
I just dislike leechers like Mtmm who come in leecher asking everybody for help etc.. then when they are called to help out a little, they start acting stupid like he has...
Then you have people that have class that feel better helping people.
You all know what I mean.
What really pissed me off is Mtmm himself harassed several people b/c they were "holding" out in this very thread.. then he goes and does the same thing.
I think you call them Bigots.
Not only is Mtmm trying to copy Dave but he also is using the same subject as Dave Hll. Ole Steroid finnish sailers.
Dave atleast shoots UFC champions...:+}
The F stop is a great site.
Very talented photographers showing everything from lighting to post processing.
You think those guys care if some Punk like Mtmm knows their technique.
Don't think so.
Maybe Rystro will give his version of what Mtmm is privately sharing??
:+}
Then Mtmm resorts to calling people Fags...
well I think in the fashion business and photography business he will go real far calling people "fags".
Again I could care o less about Dave Hill look. (Removed inflammatory content)
Keep it polite or don't bother posting.

If you can't speak to each other in polite and respectful terms (whether you feel that way or not), then all your posts will be removed from this thread. I've already removed some of the more offensive ones.
The subject of this thread is "The demystification of dave hill", lets get back on topic. |

And if snook wants to copy my style, feel free to do so. www.pakkotoisto.com/mike. But we all got to understand, Daves style is not just retouch, he´s style is a composition of funny scenarios, cool lighting and retouching.
For snook here is my blog(in finnish), where you can check out my light setups and other jobs I do. http://mike.pakkotoisto.com/
But enough for now, Snook are we cool? |

| | | Re: The demystification of dave hill! let's all he I think this thread has gone from positive to negative in MANY ways! The thread has just grown out of it's box. Now people can't find a right way to angle their questions, find the right information...Is there someone out there who can summarize this thread and make it shorter and MORE informative??? Maybe one of the mods can sit down one night and delete the pages that doesn't contain any important info or post that doesn't lead to any creative thinking/sites/tutorials ETC? I really don't think we can sit down and here and follow this thread from start to end...over 100thousand views, 64 pages and 957 replies, hmmmm...something tells me this can be done by the mods!
PLEASE????

| | | Re: The demystification of dave hill! let's all he MTMM: I don't think you should stop posting! Your pictures is inspiring and no you DON'T have to share everything! It's now what I feel is right! It would be worse if you shared the before pictures rather then the after shots! You have contributed with ideas and creative inspiration as far as I can see it! Just don't stop posting! This thread has come a long way with your ideas and words!
SNOOK: I understand your hunger for making people share their workflow in here, but we all need to tone down our behaviour! I've read all the pages last night and I can understand your anger/frustration over the point this being a sharing forum were we all share our workflow and ideas! But I think that MTMM's point of not sharing it all, is what we all see in Dave Hill as well! Some thing needs to be up to our own to find out...

By now everyone should have figured out what it takes, or at least have found a method that works for them. Because just like with anything else in Photoshop there are many ways that lead to Rome. Respect to Superkoax for being the ultimate firestarter.
I know Kelby got you started on this.
Don't know if anyone mentioned Sacha Waldman in this thread, but check his stuff out and appreciate some great composition. You'll also understand what inspired DH and many others. !! http://www.sachawaldman.com
