See in this before and after shot. He lights each set of models individually, layers them, masks them in. At least in this shot.

Before and After Shot

The only way that makes me think it isn't HDR (at least not an extreme HDR) is that the windows are blown out.
I don't think that these are before and after shots. Not the same image. Head positions different . Foot positions different!

I used it every time I open an image to make sure the skin tones are nice before I work then I check after I am done retouching to make sure they do shift too much.

Maybe Mtmm will ring in an help out... I seriously doubt it.

I learned my from instructional videos by eddie tapp and the such...:+}
you can also use threshold to find lightest and darkest points in an image and then you can make sure there is no color cast either to the image by making sure the whites are 245 245 245 unless you want to clip at 250 250 250...
Snook
LAB can be a help on skin color as well. On typical Caucasian skin, both the A Channel and the B channel should be positive. On real light Caucasian skin or very young kids, the B should be more positive than the A channel.

Dave said in his earlier work he often did multiple shots of a band so he could
light each band member individually. It very much seems this is the case
here. That shot is to light the two guys sitting down. He would have probably
moved the softbox you can see in shot to the guy standing for another shot,
then to the next guy, etc, etc, while they all held their positions. Also
explains why three of the guys are much darker in the face than the two
sitting.

The final is a composite of each member. He also said he tries to light
properly now using flags etc so he can get everyone well lit in one shot.
