Good Beginner's Tip

I found that by hiding the tools, I'm beginning to learn the hot keys faster than if I had the tool bar showing, to easily grab on to. It kind of forces you to think. The other benefit is that there is more image to be seen with the tools hidden. To hide the tools, just tap the Tab key. Tapping it again shows the tools.

i like it, ed. but tab hid everything, so i turned it off at the top.

do you set your palettes up any particular way?

Kathleen,

I'm in the beginning stages of setting up my work space to suit my personal style. I expect this to be an ongoing project. Yes, if you hit "Tab", everything gets hidden, but by using the hotkeys, I can bring up "Show Layers", "Show Info", etc. This way, I can keep the toolbar hidden, while opening only the windows I want showing at the time. This works well for me. I have also made hot keys to make adjustment layers for levels, curves, hue/saturation, new layer, and duplicate layer. When I hit the levels adjustment layer hot key with the layers showing, it will show a new levels adjustment layer. By clicking on it twice, I now have the option to adjust levels. Maybe it would be a good idea to have an ongoing thread about things we do to make life easier (with Photoshop, of course).

The author of these tips, Ben Willmore, also wrote an awesome book called Photoshop 6 Studio Techniques which I would recommend for anyone wanting to become more productive and efficient in Photoshop.
