Editorial Retouching - how to achieve the look

Hi

i am looking for some ways to achieve the qualities found in editorial retoouching - like in the magazines -Elle, Vogue etc

and how can you make a photo more editorial looking ?

a friend of mine saw some of my photos and said
"i think you should try to make the post-production more editorial"

so it lead me here again -
please share any experiences on methods that achieved the editorial look

many thanks

And seriously, the major thing about editorial retouching is that it is completely invisible. Try to make images retouched without destroying any textures and natural depth of an image. There are no "methods", only craft.

Re: Editorial Retouching - how to achieve the look

i am talking more about "the look"
there are certain characteristics that apear all though these kind of editorial images -
they have a "look" - if you look through vogue you will sooon pick up on the same look for the editorial shots -
and its these steps to getting the image looking in this way that i am interested in -
i do not need to know skin retouching but this look

Re: Editorial Retouching - how to achieve the look

It all begins with the photographer. No amount of retouch will give the photo "the look", nor will it make a substandard photo look great. The look of a photo is usually achieved with camera angles and lighting, in most cases preplanned by the photographer. As far as "editorial retouching", that is a bit of an oxymoron, because any seasoned pro news or stock shooter will tell you that editorial images are never retouched - period. If you are talking about glamour covers ad those that go with an inside story, well they're just commercial images is all, meant to sell the magazine.

Photographer, model, styling, makeup and lighting. Many of those images don't need retouching at all. You take Gisele, put fish net on her, give Demarchelier a polaroid camera - and, oh magic, you already got editorial image

well i know the shooters who work for Harpers Bazaar and Elle and other fashion mags here -
and it was in fact the man who shoots for Elle how looked at my work and made the comments -
i know that his photos are "Always" retouched for Elle as he told me that -
i know light setups and makeup do a lot and i do it myself -
but i see a look there and i know that this look is from and only from retouching -
i am talking about a good lit image /fashion shot -
its why i asked only about the retouch

Re: Editorial Retouching - how to achieve the look

Images that appear in the Editorial sections of fashion magazines will be "edgy" and dont take the skin too far. Advertising in magazines like Vogue will be more retouched. There is a difference between Editorial and Advertising images even in the same mag. Then if you look at Wonderland, V-Mag, Dazed & Confused vs Vogue, Marie Claire or Glamour the first lot have an edgy style and the latter are more commercial.
