Could you explain this step -> "2) make image 32bit, then Local adaptation to 16 bit with steep S curve with additional steep highlights"
?

0) *NO ami conversion* this time, result attached
1) Image > Mode > 32bit
2) Image > Mode > 16bit
3) apply will give you the result
4) add some additional contrast to taste
