Hi Lauren....... if you have Lightroom or PSCS3 you can do a lot of it right in the raw converter if you shoot raw, which I would.

Re: how to retouch like this??

depending on the camera you use, you can shoot in raw mode, which is a file format like jpg but it saves all the data in your camera like exposure, white balance, etc and when you open it in photoshop, it allows you to use the photoshop raw converter to change the exposure or white balance.

Re: how to retouch like this??

not to sound mean, but if that is your photo you should work on posing and lighting first. You need to get all of you elements right BEFORE you bring the shot into photoshop. If you get lighting and posing down, trust me, you will be way better off than getting this technique down first.

Adding my 2cents - it looks like nothing more than a recovery in Lightroom...just my take on the image.

Re: how to retouch like this??

I picked up the link to this tutorial a long time ago on this site. It's fun to play around with this technique and looks similar to what you're looking for... but it takes a little practice because it looks dumb when taken too far.
