Re: shadow over my mom in family pic please help

Hi, if you are using photoshop you could try to correct via Image/Adjustment/Shadow/Hightlights - or you could put a couple of duplicate layers in screen mode on top of original image - group them and add a black layer mask and paint the shadows with a soft white brush with low opacity away and adjust overall opacity of the group...Hope this helps some. If you are not using Photoshop you'll have to wait for some expert over here :-)

Re: shadow over my mom in family pic please help

Yonatan_ca,

Here it is after some shadow/highlights adjustments.
I didn't touch the rest of the picture.

A larger version is here

However, please remember that main function of these forums is not for people to have work done for free.
The primary goal of the forums is to be a place where one can learn and teach these techniques .

I understand that you just joined and it is not my intent to give you a "hard time".

If you post something, also post your best attempt. You will see many more people (much better than me ...) jump in with great ideas on how to improve on your work.

So don't be shy showing what you've done. We all have been there.

Everyone here will be more than glad to help you.

[now I get off my soapbox]

By the way: welcome to the forum. It is indeed a great place to learn.

Have you considered using her face from a different picture?

I'm not sure what program you are using. but If you can open the image in camera raw. Create two differently exposed images and use soft light you can get a natural result.

Re: shadow over my mom in family pic please help

Jonathan,

A couple of observations first:

I used Photoshop, but any moderately sophisticated image editing package will do.

The actual workflow can be very different depending of the user. I happened to do it this way, others could use other methods.
  1. open the image
  2. duplicate the image layer.
  3. Switch focus to this new layer.
  4. Use the shadow/highlights tool to lighten it up. Adjust it until the face area in the shadow looks good to you. Ignore how bad the rest of the image looks for now...
  5. With a very soft and large brush, erase everything else except what you have just corrected.
  6. Even after this you may have to touch up that area. I used the clone tool to pick up some of the color from her left cheek.
Good luck!
