It's a good book. But it wasn't what I thought it would be.

Very good for beginners though.

I have that book, I ordered it because I had high expectations about it.

It's still good, but the skin and beauty retouch isn't covered that much in the book, just a little technique about how to make the skin smoother using the blur tool, and some cloning techniques that can already be found on the internet.

I have the book based on good reviews, but it was a real disappointment. It's dated and very basic. Even the only chapter considering correcting skin tones wasn't useful. Save the money, there are much better books.

It never ceases to irritate me that people with no real experience in a field think they can just quickly work out in some way how its done, and make money writing a book on the subject. This having clearly made no investment in acquiring the skill and craft themselves. Its still far too easy unfortunately to get away with this, no-one ever seems to read the inside cover and ask the obvious question "so what is this guys actual EXPERIENCE?" I would personally dump everything ever written on the subject of retouching specifically by Lee Varis and Scott Kelby. They may have skills in other areas. Its a mistaken arrogance to believe that you are so talented that you can pass on what in content is only an easily learned software manual, you have communicated nothing.

Writing is a different skill and some are better than others at this, I will admit. But the old saying that those that can do, and those that can't teach, certainly applies here.

I used some of Scott Kelby's material when I just started out in Photoshop and I have to say it helped me a lot when I was starting out. I've begun to realize more and more, though, that a lot of the training material and books out there are geared towards beginners no matter what they say. One of the most notable exceptions that I've come across is Katrin Eismann's Restoration and Retouching, which I continue to read and practice regularly. That book really is a gem.

The reason for this, I think, is because the market for beginner's books is much bigger than that for intermediate-advanced books. It's just business. I read Scott Kelby's 7-point System based on good reviews, and although I learned some useful tidbits, most of it was very elementary even for me... and I've only been doing serious Photoshop for 2 months. For instance, he repeats how to create a new layer more than 15 times. What's more, the Technical Skill blurb on the back of the book says it's for Intermediate-Advanced users.

So this is why I'm eagerly anticipating Chris Tarantino's dvd on skin retouching. Hopefully he wont target it to beginners like the rest of the instructional material out there, but from the posts I've seen, it doesn't seem like he will. Best of luck, chris.

"he repeats how to create a new layer more than 15 times", and I'll bet he doesn't say command option shift N either- when you've worked up a "million dollar" personal fortune repeating the same old things for years, I guess you learn the value of padding
