dodge & burn practice

here's a link to a pic and i was wondering if it would be a good photo to practice the dodge & burn technique on? I've never really tried it before and i'm not really sure where to start so if anyone could give me any tips that'd be appreciated. also, in this pic i've already added a high pass filter and changed it to overlay so it looks really sharp. anyway, ur words of wisdom would be really useful to me
P.S....don't criticize the picture, it wasn't meant to be pretty or anything, just a learning tool.

Re: dodge & burn practice

HI YehlSaneerg,

First of all, thanks for the pic. Something to practice is always welcoming.

I´ve just applied a few moves to get this result, enhancing and cleaning the image, and saving a lot of time working wiht D&B.

It hasn´t D&B work, not yet. I have been playing with channels to get a better image where I can begin to D&B.

Whats your opinión? If you like it, I will post the moves for you.

Sorry if the color is not quite good, I am working in an older mac and dont have calibrated the monitor

No, there are almost no obvious wrinkles or dark areas. - the whole whole face is freckeled.

Hi Yelhsaneerg

I agree about color and texture, but this is not finished, is just a prepairing step to begin working.

The moves I have done:

Duplicate background layer.
Go to channels and look for one which can give us more luminosity (in this pic I select the green one. Click in green channel, comand +A(control in pc) to select all, comand + c to copy the complete channel, click on RGB channel, goto to layers, comand + v to copy into the layers pallete the green channel, and then, change the fussion mode to lihgten, screen or luminosity, its you up. After that have flattened layers, duplicate de background and applied a subtle of de-grunge (opacity 15/20 %) only in the areas that need it.

Finishing, I have enhanced the eyes a little. An thats all.

At this point, I think we can begin the fine tuning (D&B, color, detail (maybe looking for the right channel again)).

I dont know if this is the best way, but I think that, in this case, it works. I am so sorprised about how much the channels can give and help us.

Opinions about are welcoming.

It does not look like an original. It looks more like the first linked image retouched a bit with hi pass inverted.

Re: dodge & burn practice

notice i didn't say "here's the ORIGINAL", i said "here it is BEFORE the highpass filter" :P plus it basically is the original, all that was done at that point was fixing the right top lip a little with the warp tool because the mouth was gapped open a tiny bit.
