Newbie How do I create the 'venture' look?

Hi this is my first post and was hoping someone could shed some light on this matter.
I wanted to create images similar to that of the Venture studios. Here's what I have achieved in camera - should I have overexposed? or is it post from here on?
I can boost colour but I cant get the bleached skin tones and sharp edge contrast they seem to.

Any help appreciated

Chris

Re: How do I create the 'venture' look?

Is this what you're looking for?

1. Adjust lighting with curves.
2. Clean up noise in image.
3. Boost saturation.

Re: How do I create the 'venture' look?

Thanks Ziaphra, that's a step in the right direction to where I am trying to get

However, the colours are still not as punchy as a venture image skin tones are not white enough. I am having trouble also retaining edge details when I push the image in curves as you have.

Thanks again

Chris

ps love your work on your web site, especially the people walking on the beach with the dog

It looks to me like adjusting colors separately might help

Re: How do I create the 'venture' look?

You could try to take a better picture thats closer in the beginning. Your image lighting is not close to the style that you gave as an example of what you like. the way the photo is originally taken is the most important. So if your taking the photos in the first place study more on how you can achieve that look using your camera. then do minor adjustments later

Talking Re: How do I create the 'venture' look?

here is a action plugin I made and use to give my photos a high contrast feal. just make sure your photo is not layered or it wont work. Its not exactly like what your looking for but it may help give you more options. the action plugin is for photoshop cs3 may work on cs2. Have not tested it on older versions or photoshop

Re: How do I create the 'venture' look?

Try switching color modes from RGB to L*A*B*

add two curve adjustment layers, one set to luminosity(in the layer blending mode), the other set to color blending mode.

set curves in the lightness channel to where you want (also if you want to select the highlights and adjust to taste). (luminosity layer)

adjust curves on the layer set to color. Go to channel A and then to Channel B. Heighten the slope of the curve in equal proportions (output number) This will increase Saturation by a lot. You can add a layer mask to paint back the skin tones so they don't look nuclear.

adjust opacity of layers to suit, and merge, remember to convert back to RGB. But vibrancy of colors will be lost due to the gamut range of RGB. Photoshop will automatically bring the colors down to fit that color range. Here is a quick 30 second edit.

Re: How do I create the 'venture' look?

Rayman006, that is getting closer but still not quite hitting the mark. I think I will have to re-shoot with a different lighting set-up.

Thanks for your input, how did you go about achieving that effect?

Re: How do I create the 'venture' look?

Hi MatthewMarshall, I think you are right about starting with an image closer to where I want to be to start with - if only I had the skills!
I tried to download your action from the link you posted but it does not seem to take me anywhere... Can you check the link and re-post?

Thanks again

Chris

Re: How do I create the 'venture' look?

Thought I would try just to see if I could replicate it using your lighting

Imagenomic, Portraiture, High key
color layer + noise

Its working just save the file in a folder then open it in photoshop. works with photoshop cs3 not sure if it will in cs 2.

Just wondering has anyone else tried this.
