You could use the Color Replacement tool to paint over the bars with a light gray. You could also isolate the bars, copy them to another layer and apply one of many metalic layer styles.

After activating the color replacement tool, reduce the size of the tool using the [ key to where it is a little wider than the bar size. Paint directly on top of the bar keeping the little + sign inside the border of the bar. Do this on a duplicate layer so if you make an errror you only need to erase a small bit.

Re: need help with mokey bars in playground

You could try the Pen Tool and laboriously trace the whole thing. Or, you could try this....
Draw a very loose rectangular selection using the Marquee tool around a section of the playset, eliminating adjacent areas as much as possible. This will constrain your color selections to just that part of the image. Then using mulitple steps, select the various colors in the playset using the Select... Color Range command, saving each as a channel and eventually combining them for a final selection.

You can then refine the final selection/combination and adjust the color of just the playset as you wish.

I don't know if this is the look you are looking for. This is just a very quick try. Due to the small pictures size, difficult to work on.

-Color range
-Desaturate
-Solid color adjustment layer (used a graphic tablet to paint in the bar areas in places.)

I not so good at photoshop but I willing to learn. I don't understand how you are suppose to use the color replace tool if there are so many different colors on the monkey barss? thanks so much for your help

A larger version to work on would certainly help my old eyes!
