Re: BBC3 retouching documentary

Hmmm, ignorant insecure women. Very negative views, she refers to retouching as 'tampering'. It's amusing that she couldn't see any problem with plastering herself in makeup for a photoshoot. She couldn't see the parallels.

She's only criticising beauty shots, but she doesn't realise that every image everywhere is retouched to some degree. Product shots, jewellery, food, clothing, cars, everything.

I glad the Maxim guy tried to explain about how photography can often bring out too much detail and make you look worse than you actually do. That's where retouching should come in.

I guess it's just the degree of retouching.

the same old problem: people assume that camera sees 'actual reality'

Great link, to be honest I approve of everything she's saying. Brings a tear to me eye that does. Its frightening how many total man hours are spent "augmenting" the already beautiful just to flog stuff.

Re: BBC3 retouching documentary

really markzebra? i thought it was (as usual) bad TV, shallow and one sided... she went on a crusade but she already knew what she was 'about to find out'...

that bit with schools girls was embarrassing.. they were so obviously encouraged to say certain things and applauded when what they said matched the brief.

do people still think that whatever comes straight out of a camera is 'truly objective'? this issue was dealt with over 100 years ago!

plus: would you accuse Monet of distorting our idea of nature and damaging our relationship with it?
