Challenging image

So I retouch product photos for a major retail website and many of our photos are obtained directly from vendors. We received this image from one such vendor and need to use it but I'm looking for advice on how best to put these candycane lights on a solid white background. The only way right now I can figure out how to do it is to path it out (one cane and then just duplicate it) but I'm wondering if anyone else has any suggestions.

This is my first post here but I was so excited to find this forum!

Thank you!

Re: Challenging image

Thanks! Unfortunately based on our retail site requirements, all product images have to be on a solid white background with no shadows. I've been trying different things but nothing seems to work other than pathing. Bummer.

If anyone else comes up with anything, let me know!

Re: Challenging image

Nothing, I agree that pathing is the best way but we like to spend about 15 minutes maximum per image and this one takes much longer than that! We get hundred of images a day to retouch. :-)

We don't always look for perfection on our product images since traffic is usually not high and they'll only ever see it at 364px max.

Re: Challenging image

This looks crappy, but you said perfection wasn't needed here. I think this may be a start in the right direction. I used a solid white layer and the used the sliders in the blend mode to bring in the white. I had to use 3 white layers, one for the right, left and middle because the luminosity is different across the image.

Re: Challenging image

Hmm, try this, it won't work on the low res image but maybe...
make a dup layer and change blend to luminosity, bring up the black and white conversion tool and take all the sliders to the right except red.
