How to darken an environmental photo realistically

I'm compositing a lot of different source materials to create a frame something like this scene.

However I can't get the environment to look dark enough. I've added a cooling filter but it gives a purple hue, and then I added a linear burn layer of black on top of everything, but it doesn't seem to work very well.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
