Brian-
I don't know your age, or what stage of career you're at, but you may want to consider working in a prepress environment for a couple/few years. IMHO, you can greatly benefit from learning color and how to build printable files, and you'll get plenty of practice honing your everyday retouching skills. Add a artistic background to that, and voila!, you may be able to get your foot in the door somewhere else. Good luck!

BagLady, yes sadly working for a global bank creativity gets strangled, the days of engaging staff with artistic work have gone in the current climate and everything's now very corporate, that's why I want out :O) Feel free to have a look at my flickr page for some of my experiments but these are by no means serious attempts at high end retouching, just me getting creative;O) http://www.flickr.com/photos/29852199@N05/

Sadly I'm some way into my career but hey you're never too old right?! I'm actually 42 but I've seen people switch careers at my age so I'd never say I'm too old but maybe too old for your suggestion even though it's sound advice for someone younger.

There are times I'd like to switch careers and start selling hot dogs from a truck!
