Help In Learning to Use Gradient Maps

I have read in many places that a gradient map can be used to modify and/or equalize colors in a photo. However, I just can't seem to get the hang of it. I have found over the years that learning the keystrokes and menu navigation needed is half the battle. Can anyone point me to a detailed description of how to use a gradient map to equalize colors in a photo? If I can do it once, correctly, then the rest will fall into place.

Plenty of sites on the net to find gradients to download, I found a lot of useful ones over at Ladyoak. You have to register, but once you have done that there are loads of good gradients to download, also a lot of other useful brushes and presets to be had. One of my most used sets -
