Dodge&Burn Movie/Tutorial

A RetouchPRO member HuBBa has posted an updated (and narrated) tutorial about how to work with Dodge & Burn retouching techniques on skin and with reshaping facial features at "HuBBa's Photo-a-day(almost Plogg"

Re: Dodge&Burn Movie/Tutorial

Thank you =) A little word about the length. The D+B is actually done in realtime (including my narration btw since a lot of people seems to prefere that to speeded up versions. The length is 68 minutes so dont be in a rush when viewing it.

Enjoy.

Too slow, and not doing anywhere near enough, you have to learn to work at twice that speed. Also if you look at the "Portfolio's" on that site, you can see that these are not anywhere near finished.

Mark. Im not a professional retoucher, i'm a photographer forced to do my own retouch right now. So im not as fast or as good as a full time retouchartist but the techniques are still valid. And showing them at a slower pace might actually teach people something.

So if you would be so kind as to produce a video of your own to show your obvious expertise in this field, feel free to do so. I am sure it will be much appreciated.

Have fun.

Re: Dodge&Burn Movie/Tutorial

Thats a fair point, I'm sorry -I wasn't aware you were not a retoucher. There's nothing at all wrong with what you have shown technically, in fact to be honest thats probably the first time I've seen a video of someone doing it in any way correctly.

Talking Re: Dodge&Burn Movie/Tutorial

I never knew how to do the d and b method, but this really helps, lengthy or not. I am still trying to do it right, but this certainly points me in the right direction.

Thanks for the video!

Re: Dodge&Burn Movie/Tutorial

Hubba...very nice. I learned a lot more regarding dodge/burn and skin. Makes more sense to me than before. Just wondering how you picked up this technique? Figured it out? Someone show you? There certainly isn't much literature...at least I haven't seen it in the past five years that I've been reading. I've learned more from you for free verses that worthless $200 retouching CD I purchased last year...live and learn! Again..thank you very much for sharing!!

Re: Dodge&Burn Movie/Tutorial

Absolutely fantastic learning experience. You just showed me more for free, than I have ever had someone show me before. As an amateur who likes to learn, I have always wanted to pick up better techniques to make my own portrait photography look better. Thank you.

Re: Dodge&Burn Movie/Tutorial

After decoding ancient documents written by the unshaking hands of tibethan monks i trecked through the himalayan massif's to learn at the feet of the mast...

nah, there are a lot of talk about the dodge & burn technique in different tutorials (and threads here) and once you figure out the basic theory behind it (even out the luminosity by shadowing highlights and lighten shadows) then it's not hard to learn.

And once the theory is down then what technique to use (dual curves, actual dodge & burn, softlight layer, etc) is more a matter of choise depending on the image or what you want to do.

And thanx for all the positive feedback =)

Thank you, Hubba! I didn't know about this method and it really improves the skin! And, best of all, with a natural look! I'm gonna practice a lot with it now! Thank you very much!

Your generosity is extremely appreciated. People are so stingy with their skills and abilities, that is where arrogance comes in. The world needs more people who share their talents like you do.

Re: Dodge&Burn Movie/Tutorial

Hubba I cant thank you enough. I have been searching for 8 months to see a video of this being done in realtime . What realtime does for me is lets me start to 2nd guess where you will work next and if you do what I think you will do next I know I am learning. And DnB on a pixel level has been a complete guessing game to me until your video. Thanks again!
I never have learned from any video that approaches doing this by doing one small spot then says something like " now do that all over for the rest" then cuts away and comes back to a completely done image .

MarkZebra you are an example of what I have found in the last 8 months. Nothing but a critque about how it wasn't done right and yet nothing showing how to do it exactly.
Look forward to your video .

With all due respect to MarkZebra. I am an amateur retoucher. I have been a photographer for three years, er, I have owned my current Nikon D70s for three years. I have been retouching for about three months. A couple of weeks ago I sent MarkZebra a private email asking him for advice. MarkZebra answered my questions thoughtfully and conscientiously.

You might say "big deal, he answered a question". The big deal involved taking the time to examine the website www.popphoto.com. Under the "how to" tutorials, examine Digital Toolbox: How to Edit Portraits. This tutorial is a 14 step, skin smoothing process. Helpful to the beginner, but not a professional workflow process. An examination of this tutorial would reveal my current level of expertise. I can follow this workflow. Having professional feedback, can instill confidence, and keep you from making mistakes, and shorten the learning curve.

Second, there were two photos from the website www.photocamel.com, which displayed a level of professional capacity I would like to achieve. MarkZebra took the time out of his day to examine these photos. At this point, MarkZebra knew the level of my current skills, he knew where I wanted to be, and what I hoped to become, as a RetouchPro. He pointed out one photo was a commercial fashion photo, the other was a glamour/beauty photo. Professional retouch strategy will vary, depending on the use of the photograph.

Third, he took the time to answer in a private email. MarkZebra did this for me, and he does not know me from a can of paint.

I have a complaint with Adobe, many of their tutorials are designed to address higher level intermediate, advanced and professional users. They often ignore beginners and lower level intermediate users. I know Adobe could sell more copies of PS and Elements, if they included a workflow workbook and/or dvd tutorial.

Re: Dodge&Burn Movie/Tutorial

Lets not all go after Mark. He was just being a little bit overzealous since there have been quite a few people posing off as professional fashion retouchers and who really do not have the skillset to do that. I'm not a retoucher, im a photographer so my skillset is accordingly not as perfect and me and Mark solved that already.

Mark gives good contributions here aswell so lets just have a happy 2009 now =)

Re: Dodge&Burn Movie/Tutorial

Hubba,

Many thanks for such a "simple" explanation of D&B. As has been said, a lot of PS is easy - once you have the basic understanding and some techniques. Trouble is, "basic" means very different things to different people!

Yet another skill to practise in '09!

HNY.
