D&B Attempt

So after days upon days of reading about Dodge and Burn. I've been attempting it on a few pictures, but each turn out the exact same. I spend hours on it, and the skin still has alot of color shifts from dark to bright.

Here's an example. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
As for brush settings, I've been using a small brush around 5 - 10 depending on size area and detail I'm trying to get into. Low opacity, about 6%.

Re: D&B Attempt

Are you lightening dark pixels with the dodge tool (set to shadows or mid tones)?

Likewise... are you burning the light pixels with the burn tool (set to highlights or midtones)?

You are correct... I can't see much change.

Can you see the individual pixels change color in real-time as you go along (at 1200% enlargement)?

Re: D&B Attempt

So a few key points to check:
  • Make sure you fill a layer with 50% gray
  • Make sure that layer's blend mode is set to "Soft Light"
  • Use the Paintbrush tool, set very soft, at the specific size of the area you're trying to lighten
  • Set your background/foreground colors to pure black and white
  • Set the FLOW (not the opacity) of the brush to 3%

You may want to try at a slightly higher flow rate but start low to begin with. Also, make sure your brush is no larger than the area you're lightening or darkening. It's a very gentle, time consuming process but the results are spectacular.

Re: D&B Attempt

Also try to work in black and white. That makes it easier to identify where to even out the skin. Just put a b/w-gradient map in the top of your layers stack.

Re: D&B Attempt

I've included some examples. The first is the D&B grey layer, the second when that's applied to the image. And the third is with an additional layer, a composite of the image with a dust and scratches filter applied and about 35% opacity to further lend the pore structure.

Let me know if you have any questions.
