Re: Sun Blow Out

First, I brought the image into ACR and made two save as a smart objects layers. One for the bright side of the bride's face and one for the shadows. I masked both of these in. Also, lightened up the side of the grandmother's (?) face. I worked on the grandmothers camera-left eye and took out the reflection. I cleaned up the bride's skin and removed stray hairs.

How do you guys always manage to destroy peoples examples they post up here? Is it the fact that they file is lower qualtiy or is it that you guys really arent that good at tackling these sorts of issues?Sorry but both examples are pretty bad

Here's my fix only on the problem area only. Camera Raw graduated filter and shadow/highlight tool.

Re: Sun Blow Out

Rob,
At first glance, I thought there would be detail to recover in that area. But, I could not get ACR to find any on the extreme edge of her cheek. So, I guess it time to do a little patch work and d&b.

I have not upgraded to CS4 yet, so I can't comment on ACR 5. The results look interesting though. It could be your original has more to recover than the posted jpg also.

Re: Sun Blow Out

I did plenty to the photo... most of the heavy lifting was done by my first two actions...The eye had to be replaced as the definition of the lifted eye was less then desired...and there was a magenta color cast from the sweeter that had to be corrected. To fix the now slight hot spot, I took some texture from cheek(Luminosity) then painted under it with color(color) samples from close by.

Everything was done non-destructively. The last picture is desaturated to look like the original. But I like the one with more color...

Hope it helps,
-Keven

Re: Sun Blow Out

As for the new raw... its just like the new lightroom. the main plus is the ability to now selectivly Adj areas with a brush. Like reducing the exposure to only the brushed areas. its a nice feture, but doing it in PS is still more control.

Just in case anyone cares, below are screen shoots of only the first two actions.

Re: Sun Blow Out

Nice work Keven. By the way (it's hard to tell from the thumbnails) was there retrievable skin detail on the brides right cheek under her ear ?

Re: Sun Blow Out

You could use levels or curves with masking.

Re: Sun Blow Out

TommyO,

The short answer is no, the skin was blown out. As you can see with the exposure: offset turned down.

I copy murged>>>patched the area>>> then erased all un-needed area>> Set that layer to luminosity>> Painted in color in underlying layer set to color

They should really make a patch that samples from all layers.........

Re: Sun Blow Out

Chillin

That really looks very good on the bride.

I thank you all there are many great ideas on how to fix this. However, I don't have CS4 yet so some of the new Raw techniques aren't available to me yet.

Re: Sun Blow Out

Rob,

I just found >THIS< and it seems to work well.

Below are my results from JUST the technique above and some contrast reduction and exposure increased masked for cheek. Then some of the same fine details from the other image.

I could have done a better job with the lightening of the shadow, but I’ll leave that to you. The highlight was fixed by the painting with the above method.

This should be feasible with your current set up.
