how can I make dark borders, vignettes like this?

well, I come across this site of scott irvine and I noticed the dark frames around his images and this style impressed me.
how can I make these in photoshop? can someone explain me shortly step-by-step?

One simple way:
- use the elliptical markee tool (or draw with the lasso tool) to show the limit of your vignette
- Select/feather large (100 to 150)
- Select/inverse
- copy to new layer (Ctrl J)
- set new layer blend mode to multiply, adjust opacity or try other blend modes (linear burn...)

but he has some more effects in this vignettes. they can be because of a film.
actually I am a digital 3d artist. and I would like to learn to create on my virtual images as if they are shot with a real-world camera.

There are a lot of different things he does to his pictures. From doge and burn to adding noise to using blur. The vignettes and frames are easy to reproduce. If you would like to learn some things about making your 3D worlds look real take a look at this web site

He takes pictures then rebuilds them using photo shop. His final results look real but they are not. I have also attached a before and after picture of my try to make the look you were after.
