Grandaughter

My grandaughter wearing a hair extention . Taken with 5d with soft box for main , brolly fill in and boom with fresnel for hair light . I've attempted to build up the hair at the top , painted out her bra strap . Worked on eyes and mouth , spot healer , D & B etc. Didn't want to obliterate her freckles .
Does it need more work ?
Any comments or suggestions will be very welcome . Bill

Re: Grandaughter

First of all, beautiful girl. And good job editing.

Main comment would just be just fine tune things. I circled in red most of the main areas. From what you have done, should be within your skills.

I tried my hand to do them. Then I contoured the face a bit with D&B. More info found HERE This images contour layer is below, just copy and paste it into your psd and change to softlight blending mode. You can make it more complex but im not that good yet .

The other comment would be the eye shadow; to me it does not look natural and may want to try that again. I'll work on it later if you need help. Also burn in some of the shirt as it is slightly blown on the sholder.

Hope it helps,
-Keven

Re: Grandaughter

Nice job on the hair at the top! It's hard to tell but you may be picking up a color cast from the lips onto her teeth(or at least in the shadows there). I don't know if you employed some noise reduction/blur but you may want to mask that out or try something adjusting saturation/color balance in that area. Looks like she has different colored eyes?

Re: Grandaughter

Good catch on the teeth, I forgot about it. Updated picture.

I don’t think I did the teeth justice...Anyone know a better way or comments? Normaly I dont have to do the B&W but in this case I think I had to, couldn't think of another way.

  1. Hue sat reduction (selected the casted color then desat and lightened)
  2. Converted to B&W set to color blending mode (lowered opacity till it looked good)
  3. D&B to lighten

Re: Grandaughter

I'd also suggest making a full comp layer, running a high pass filter over it and set the layer to soft light. The image seems a bit soft to me.

Re: Grandaughter

Thanks for all the suggestions , I won't pretend that I understand them ! I've never attempted some of the techniques mentioned , but I'll give it a go . Don't know what I can do about the eyes , all the other shots are the same , can't figure out why . Bill

Re: Grandaughter

The B4 eye is does not have the reddish orange eye shadow. I have never been good at digital eye makeup so I asked my GF to show me how it’s done. It was her first time in PS and she is not a makeup artist, so don’t think that this is a PRO's job. I just told her to paint the mask slowly.

But what she came up with is below. The eye lid is a darker red the crease is a lighter red. Painted very slowly with a 6% opacity brush, 30% flow. (Zoom out to 25% to see what it would look like in the original picture.)

As for the teeth, in looking at the original, the teeth seem fine. They just need some D&B. So either when you painted her lips or boosted their color you need to mask the teeth out.

For the Eye I used hue/sat to darken and saturate one, and lighten and desaturate the other. Played with opacitys till it looked even. Its close... If all else fails, you can always copy the eye and D&B to blend in...

Hope this helps,
-Keven

Re: Grandaughter

Wow Keven ! This isn't just a comment , it's a lesson ! Can't tell you how grateful I am , seems like I've got a lot to learn !!!
I've never recorded actions or used the History brush and it wasn't until I read threads on here that I used the D&B . I just Airbrushed .
I.ve been having another go , but wierd things keep happening in CS4 . I clicked on the High Pass filter and everything disappeared . I've got to start from scatch , saving as I go this time .Thanks again , Bill

Re: Grandaughter

PS happens...they should make a recovery for things like this...

But sometimes starting over makes things better. I'll edit a picture for 2 hours and loose it, then recreate it even better in 1 because I learned from b4.

I learned 10% from pre-RTP, 40% from RTP, and 50% partisipating and practice. Im still learning, we all are. Most of my current progress has been in speed of my work. I can do things twice as fast and twice as good as I used to.

Good luck,
-Keven
