Re: d&b tutorial download

Karin. i think it's the fact that the extreme contrast tools layer will lie a bit about whats actually in the image and you may overdo the adjustment where it should have been a bit more subtle and also miss areas to adjust completely. So you need to switch back and forth a bit more.

The dual curves give you more control if you need it but needs to switch between layers to change between burn and dodge. The softlight is very quick to switch between burn and dodge but shadows and highlights will be on the same layer so if you wish to adjust them separately it wont be done easily.

The end result is the end result however, regardless if you used dual curves or soft light layer. It is your experience as a retoucher that will let you decide which one to use at any given image and when.

Oh and yes, if you overdo D&B it will look like a blurred skin effect since the technique in itself when applied to pore details will flatten the contrast (and contrast gives us the sharpness in the details). So being able to adjust the dodge & burn separately in this case is quite useful.

Re: d&b tutorial download

hi to all great work here

may ask a question???

how about using Curve adj layer, one for Dodge and the other to Burn set to luminosity instead of making the curve on the duplicate layer image ???

Re: d&b tutorial download

Hi Cli
Yes, I agree that an adjustment layer is more eficient than a pixel layer.
But why the luminosity blending mode?

Hi Nienna,

This is pretty much my first time posting. Just can't help to say thanks for the tutorial. I have been doing the retouch job for quite a period of time but still am facinated and learn a fair number of tips from you tute.

Again, thanks & hope to see more of yours.

Re: d&b tutorial download

Ok this might be way too advanced for me but I am going to learn this and ask dumb questions until I understand it fully.
I have CS3 , when I make a curves layer it creates a new layer on top of the layer the curves is to be associated with. In her vid that does not happen.
Is this because I use CS3 ? If so can someone give me info on how to do this for CS3.
I'm stuck on just setting up the layers I havent even gone into any DB yet.

Re: d&b tutorial download

Biwa, if I recall it correctly, she did not use adjustment layers but a bg-copy and applied the curves to it directly. Anyway you can use adjustment layers instead of bg-copies - keeps the files size down..

Either go to Image/Adjustments/Curves or just press {ctl+m} and it will apply the curves directly to the layer. Clicking the fill/adjustment layer icon at the bottom of the Layers panel will create the curves layer.

Re: d&b tutorial download

Hello,

it's a great video. But one question bugs me: How do you decide what values to use for the curves layer? Is there a visual clue for orientation?

Regards,
Joa

Great tutorial!

Is there a way to save the DivX file on my Mac?
Or does the avi file need to be converted every time
I need to review the tutorial?

Thanks!

Re: d&b tutorial download

As mentioned before in this particular tutorial, the skin ends up having a sort of blur look since the D&B was very in depth.

Obviously that is a result of the retoucher, but is it somewhat an issue with the tools layers she is using to reveal contrast?

I guess I'm saying should I use the Tool layers like she is using, or a curves layer with an S curve, and a hue/saturation layer with the saturation taken out.

I like the skin to come out real smooth after some hours of D&B, but I do not want it to look flat.

Re: d&b tutorial download

the tools are not the thing that would make the retouched image look flat - its only the D&Bing.

meaning - You.

Re: d&b tutorial download

Alrighty and is there a reason Nienna, that you use the Tools method rather then a curves and saturation adjustment layer?
