Tryout for tucia.com what do you think?

I was surfing retouching websites and noticed that Tucia.com freelanced their work out. So i thought I'd see if I could get some work from them just to see what they pay e.t.c. They replied and asked me if I could do a test retouch for them. They asked me---

Quote "So, we want to make sure if you can do well in the skin retouch.
Please check out the attachment, and try to make the skin as smooth as
like magazine model's, and still keep it natural."

So I did what they asked their reply was..

Quote "I'm afraid it's not what most of our customers want.

Skin retouch is really important for us. Maybe you can do some
investigation on Filter->Gaussian Blur, and Smudge tool.

Now I think I did a good job on the skin (examples below) without going overboard (they wanted natural looking). I used a touch of blur but any more would make it look unnatural but smudge tool??? Where and why would I use that??? Of course I didn't touch or adjust any of the surroundings(they only asked for skin) I could have blended the skin tones on her leg a bit better. If you check out their website the work shown is average at best.

So am I wrong and my work is crap or is my work any good? Thanks for your opinions.

Well I think you essentially gave them what they asked for. However, what I see on their site I personally wouldn't consider realistic retouching. I wouldn't pay $1 for the results I see there.

Learn the D&B method and make it your primary technique.

Hello mlerrigo.
first of all the Gaussian Blur and Smudge tool will make the skin non-natural at all.can't understand why did they even said that.
I saw the pic and it is just ok.
the best way to work with skin is with the healing brush and then with the clone tool with opacity 13% and patience. Patience is key of good retouching and the bad thing is no one wants to spent more time on a pic cause the payment is not good.

Try again and see if it work.
And ALWAYS to something more, they say only skin tone, cut something you don't like, explain why...

Re: Tryout for tucia.com what do you think?

The guys at tucia.com do what's called "fashion" or "glam" retouching. When they say they want a "natural" look, that doesn't meant they want it as close to the original as possible. They want an end result that could pass for a real photograph, but doesn't have any flaws found in the original photo.

They gave you a really horrid photo to work with too.

The mothers just wanted a better retouch than they (obviously) can do themselves, but didn't want to pay for it, mlerrigo. You were (ab)used.

I think I'm going to email them and see what their "top guy" managed to do. Should be good for a laugh. But you're probably right they just wanted a freebie out of me.

probably yes.
I did some freelancing work for a model agent and now he is avoiding my calls,he hasn't payed me for pro retouching models(moving hands, cut butts..)
Everyone wants free stuff.
I'm sorry that they took advantage of you mlerrigo.
Hope you're more luck next time.

Re: Tryout for tucia.com what do you think?

I agree with L33t, your job was unfinished. My main problem with it is the two toned leg and there is still some "cheese" on the thigh. Honestly, as this is an interview, I would have gone the extra step and removed the white thing and fixed the background. Itís probably there to see if you will even do it.

Below is what I came up with, itís still not 100% but as itís a thumbnail, its good enough. Refer to the screenshot for editing info. The stuff in blue are my own actions (donít ask). Iím not a pro... but Iím trying to get there. This was actually a good picture for a test, many elements to fix and change.

Iím not saying what you did was bad; itís just that you could have kept going.

Good luck,
-Keven
