Beauty Retouch, comments please

I did a retouch of my girlfriend for her portfolio. Let me know what you guys think. I'm including the before and after shot.

BTW, how do I turn on the IMG code so that the pictures display and not links?

Thanks!

Re: Beauty Retouch, comments please

My eye goes right to the model's face and then to her right shoulder. It's dark and pulls my attention away from the face and out of the composition. I would minimize anything distracting from the face, in this case lightening the shoulder.

There are also some very minor stray hairs near the part in her hair.

Otherwise it looks great. You did a nice job of not "overcooking" it.

Re: Beauty Retouch, comments please

lighten the hollows in her shoulders
lighten the crook next to her nose
where you have removed a red patch on her right shoulder, you can see some of the red left around the patch (sorry for the bad explination lol)
there are a few stray hairs in her parting

other than that good job !

what techniques did you use to clear up the skin? it is very effective

Re: Beauty Retouch, comments please

Hello mileeeeeeenaaaa,
The skin is little blotchy. The color is inconsistent when compare face and shoulder/neck. The retouch level of the face don't match the face and shoulders. Also a face seems little bit overdone for me, but this is personal preference.

Best regards,

Re: Beauty Retouch, comments please

Not a bad start- but upper neck looks smudged or blurred or something. Lower neck and area needs more work, not using blurring obviously. Personally, the strip highlight across her forehead maybe needs looking at.

Wow! Tough crowd. She's a beautiful girl to start with. But I thought you did a great job.

I tried playing around with your retouched version, but there wasn't much to do. I tried things like a little more sparkle in her eyes, a little wetter lips, a little smoother skin, highlights and shadows on her face. But that was about it.

Again, great job.

I like the picture. The face clean up was ok, you need to work on more none destructive methods. You have lost texture where you cloned/healed. Another place to work on the body D&B, there are a lot of discolorations on the chest.

______________________

I too gave your picture a try, hope you don’t mind. I decided to take it a different direction and making it a little more custom and unique. The D&B is not perfect, but I got tired of using the 1px brush. Hope you like it.

Beautiful GF by the way.

Hope you like it,
-Keven

In what way? do you mean like evening out bumps with liquify? or like cleaning up strays?

Or sharpening?

Below I addressed some of the hair concerns.. Liquified to make it rounder and removed some of the strays. Also corrected some of areas I missed.

Best regards,
Funny how beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I look at the finished photo and think it's great. The skin doesn't look over done to me at all. I can agree there could be a better match between the face and the neck/shoulder area. Overall it's not that much because I didn't notice it until you mentioned it. I don't think the skin is a 'little blotchy' but I think there is an off red color on the forehead.
Different monitors etc, may show things in a variety of ways. Am I wrong in thinking that uploading here is in JPG? I haven't done any yet (uploading) but JPG's are not that great and deteriorate pretty fast.

Re: Beauty Retouch, comments please

If this is your girlfriend Glam, then you are a very lucky fellow. She's a stunner. I think you did a wonderful job on the finished photo. As mentioned in another post here that I wrote, there are a couple minor things. But who's noticing when she's so fab looking.

Re: Beauty Retouch, comments please

IMHO, I like the look but I like Glam's better. For some reason after you did this her shoulders are drawing undue attention and look a little like a quarter backs. But the soft look of the face is a nice touch.

Re: Beauty Retouch, comments please

I think that you did a /very/ nice job. I didn't notice her stray hair until it was pointed out by others, but the light hairs on black do stand out now. You might consider a slight focus blur to clean up her skin tones on her chest, that might be more natural than giving the rest of her body the same (subtle) face treatment -- and keep the focus on her face. If she needed a lot of work, that's something else, but she's beautiful and you did a great job of not fixing it if it ain't broke.

Re: Beauty Retouch, comments please

I personally like your version best, it's the right amount of contrast and air brushing, it still looks natural ish without trying to hard. the only 2 things I'd change would be lower just a bit the brightness on her shoulder, but don't take all the light away from it, i'll look weird that she's got all this light on her face but not her arm, and the flyaway hairs, they distract a little.

So all and all, good job!!

Good job Glam. Better than most of the 'trial' retouches... they take it too far while yours is rather natural.

Re: Beauty Retouch, comments please

i think the image itself is strange. her whole chest, back and shoulder area looks very oddly positioned, and not at all natural. that may have worked for a full body shot where you can see where her arm is going, but as a close up i don't think it works too well.
