I was his first assistant and retoucher. He's doing reaally good, and gets looads of money, as much as he knows nothing about photography or lighting hehe.
you'd surprise by how many of the big names in photography would be nothing without their assistants. made me realise the biggest talent most photographers need is salesman skills, the rest can be paid.
He's one of the top name of the country in commercial photography, that's all i can tell you.

So true. But what's a good assistant/retoucher without a job, eh? They got the experience and client base that we would all need one day. So many togs out there these days due to low entry level. You should be lucky to work for someone that can hook you up one day, teach you the etiquette and see how they get these jobs.

Salomon you right photographer without mua, stylist, retoucher and other bunch of people around him is nothing.I'm self photographer and i know how important is the team and their work.
I'm wondering sometimes if I watch the photos ...why they need photographer ?...they can use stock photos and just put everything together(in this case only good creative work of retoucher is most important, and they have got a lot of power.. skills).
From other side...photographer...got the lighting skills but also graphic designers, painter etc.
I'v been on photoshooting (can't tell the name, top advert photographer) and it's true, hi just pressed the button on his camera....assistant set up the light, tripod etc... of course he checked what they did.
Top work is that you mainly talking with client so they now why they pay so much and make sure they happy.
Soul of Kilik "what's a good assistant/retoucher without photographer and vice versa..:-)
anyway....any shooting give you some skills.
Most important to get the job...nice portfolio and connections :-)....and don't forget to socialize, networking.

You're right Robert when you talk about team work. cause in fashion it is crucial.
assisting for this photographer once i had this huge chance to work with this art+commerce team..

the model was high class, hair stylist was Tomohiro Onashi, Make up was Chanel's DA Peter Phillips. Stylist was also from chanel. that was just amazing. working with those guys work were simply unreal. there was only silence on the shooting.. every one knew what they had to do and there was that kind of mutual understanding without a word, the way musicians do. absolutely perfect.

they arrived freshly from NY early the morning and by noon we were done shooting! and back to NY the same day. Every aspect of the shooting were done with the same intensive attention. and the images that came out needed only a few touch up, skin was perfect.
yes the photographer only used his index finger this day.
but it would be unfair to say he did nothing, cause actually it is him who put all of us together and did the conections.
