Talking Pageant Retouch.

Well my aunt's daughter is a big competitor in Glitz pageants and didnt want to spend money on getting her photo prefesionally retouched (20-75$). So, i volunteered (sp?) to do it for free. I added hair, eyelashes, earrings, a bow, whitened the fur, fixed some facial features, and made her hair and eyebrows straight. This is what i got as a before and after shot.

I do understand that it is not national level, and it's not very glitzy. But whatever, i tried . And i personally think its very good for a person my age (13). constructive criticism is welcomed and i will attach a half-done photo if you want to try and retouch this yourself for fun or for example porposes.

thanks!

Re: Pageant Retouch.

all in all its a nice job. the only thing that bugged me was that she went from looking 13 to someone a few years older. And also the last picture makes her look like a Barbie doll. Maybe roll back the opacity and/or add some grain?

Re: Pageant Retouch.

Good effort, but the face is too plastic, lack of natural details on her.

Re: Pageant Retouch.

^^I agree with those above

almost looks like one of those beautiful portraits you see painted

this photo don't need much work so see about lowering the opacity some

and sometimes when you keep nic pic'n at a photo you tend to overdue it

like I do at times lol

Re: Pageant Retouch.

Well I am really trying to learn this. I am a photography student and I have not found a graphic instructor yet that teaches this. The 3rd pic might look like plastic, but in the pageants that is what they are looking for. Google Troy Douglas Photography...see his pics...they are winning all over the nation. None of the girls look real they all look animated, but this is what is winning in the pageant world. Moms do not like it, but get the pics because they know they will not win the big money without them. So if anyone can tell me how...what program...anything...I would love to know!!!

Re: Pageant Retouch.

there aren't any high resolution photos i could find for troy douglas, but his do seem a little plasticy in the small thumbnails. a little googling and i found a pageant retoucher with this site: http://www.pageantretouching.com/index.php

take a look. if you zoom up on the pics you'll notice its not soo much of a porcelain plastic look. he adds back texture and grain to give it some human characteristics. It's all about the fine details. You can head to a nearby bookstore and pick up some retouching books, they've helped a lot. Also there are a lot of threads floating around on here that do a good job of showing you how to achieve the look you want. Best of luck, you'll get it.

P.S. try to keep the details and depth of the face when retouching. Don't rid of those details or else it'll be too 2-d ish?

I think you did a great job.
Heres what I did. I used the backlighting, glamour filter, and skin smoother tools

Re: Pageant Retouch.

I think you did a fairly good job, it looks fake and plastic.
So while looking at Troy's site, it all look fake and plastic, but he still has a 3D look, maybe you should try to shape the head by using a softlight layer and painting with black and white in a low opacity (do some search on this forum, and you will find what I mean).

Also, try to keep the right details: pores shouldn't be visible (like plastic), but other props should be good in details.

Keep up the good work, as you still are 13, I think we got a nice retoucher comming up!
