Thoughts on KateB please

Hi All,

I've not been around in ages but I recently got a wacom (at last!) and it's renewed my interest in retouching. It's only a bamboo but is perfect for where I'm at, a hobbyist with a keen interest and not very deep pockets!

Anyways I found a picture of Kate Beckinsale (a truly beautiful uk actress) and I wasn't so much going for a traditional retouch, I was trying to turn it from a picture into something a little more arty. Thoughts and comments welcomed.....

Thanks

Ps No blurring was used.

Re: Thoughts on KateB please

Hi Schlinky,
Congratulations on your new Wacom, I use mine a ton.

I like your version, especially the color. I realize you're not going for a traditional retouch, but personally, I think the photo could still benefit from evening out some of the blotchiness in the skin. In case you haven't tried this, put two blank layers over your working dodge and burn layer(s) and fill them with black, one set to color mode and the other to overlay and make them into a new group. This just helps accentuate any unevenness in the skin tones. The attached photo is how it would look viewed this way, I've scaled back the transparency on the overlay layer to help seeing into the shadows a bit more here. Just my 2 cents, welcome back.

Re: Thoughts on KateB please

Thanks for that, just out of interest this is where I was up to before I decided to get all 'creative'.

This is purely DnB, no 'degrunge' going on. It doesn't help that the original photo wasn't actually in focus.

Btw, the method I use for DnB is using two adjustment layers (curves) I'll try your suggestions too though

This is very natural and less painterly.
I do really like both versions and each one serves a purpose. What I mean is you could do the first one on a canvas and the second as a natural portrait if they were your own photo of course and not one of Kate.

Not necessary. It's already in the original.

Re: Thoughts on KateB please

Thanks potion, I'm just trying to get my eye in again after a long break, I'm actually enjoying retouching again so there will be more to come I'm sure

And W.Smith, tell me about it! Hence what I wrote in post #4

"It doesn't help that the original photo wasn't actually in focus."
