Lightbulb Removing the Background?

I am sorry if this has been asked before not sure what the rules are with posting a topic that has already been answered I did find a similar thread but I thought perhaps someone or someones could educate me on this a little.

This is also my first post after experimenting with so many techniques.

I would like to give this particular photo a plain white background, I guess you would call it high key? but as you can see the colour etc is off, I have the raw but wasn't sure if you would rather have that? and I had a tough time dropping the size of the image to hehe. These were some tester shots that I did to fire the wee girl (my cousin) up they were never supposed to be used but my aunt likes this particular one.

A step by step would be fantastic, and any other changes you make hopefully. I don't have much experience with actually retouching images like this but the technique will come in useful!

Anyway thank you for reading and hopefully teaching me a new technique!

Forgot to add to this already long post, I have mainly tried using the lasso to select the girl and Brolley, then Inverse and using a soft white brush, but I seem to always get a fake effect, very fake effect lol.

Re: Removing the Background?

First, welcome to RTP. I hope this is the beginning of a long stay for you and that you enjoy it here.

Second, you are in luck. There are a couple of really great tutorials in the tutorial section on exactly what you are asking. Swampy has one and Flora has one. Both are excellent and will serve to answer your questions much better than someone doing it for you.

Also the contest this month is on extracting a background. TPaul, the moderator of that contest has posted several links to sites that discuss masking in detail.

With that wealth of information at your disposal, I'm sure you will get superb results in short order.

Good Luck,
Janet
