There's are very simple way to push up the whites.

Set the foreground color as white.
Go to Select->Color range
Push up the quantity of white.
Ok

Now you have a white area selection or what is called a simple luminosity mask or somethink very close to it.

Now fill with white. Adj opacity ar play with overlay, softlight b.modes if you want.
