Re: I share my photoshop techniques Well obviously I just mean the retouching part, not the lighting or set up. But does the "0,1%" mean that you don't go into that style of processing very much on the training (I only ask because some of your work has a bit of that look), or are you just saying that there's a lot more to that style than just photoshop? For the point of clarification, if I had an unprocessed shot that was lit just like Greenberg, Hill, etc (sorry, I really need a better name for this look, since they're not the only ones doing it, and you see it all over commercial advertising), could I use what you teach in the tutorials, along with some practice and skill, and achieve that look?

Re: I share my photoshop techniques Thanks, I'm looking forward to buying it, I just wanted to make sure what kind of training it was. And I think Dave and Jill may be bad examples, but I have no idea what the style is actually called, they were just the closest examples I could think of. Maybe I should just call it Calvinized.

Re: I share my photoshop techniques I have not found any video that teaches Dave Hill or Jill Greenberg. I will say that unless you are very far down the road toward understanding what goes into these styles, Calvin's video is a great starting point for getting a highly stylized post look.

Re: I share my photoshop techniques Hi Calvin, I look forward to checking out the blog when I return from work later today. I would also like to thank you for putting together your latest tutorial in English, I purchased it on the weekend and I've slowly been making my way through the videos. Very enjoyable and some fantastic techniques so far, I hope that we’ll see more tutorials in English from you in the future. Thank You, Jason

| Re: I share my photoshop techniques Quote:
I bought Calvin Hollywood's Calvinized, and I have watched about 1/3 of the tutorials. I already found so many great techinques that I had to stop watching the tutorials and try them out on my own pictures. I must watch the rest as well, 'cause this training material is absolutely FULL of great and useful stuff. And the best part is, it's real easy too! I usually do not spend money on Photoshop tutorials, but Calvinized is worth every single penny. If you want to be able to achieve the illustrated look that resembles DH/Greenberg this is the best help you can get. I do some freelance photography/retouch jobs on occation, and I actually used the techniques from Calvinized yesterday as a suggestion on how to improve the look on a bunch of kinda boring pictures of industrial workers in a workshop to be used in their advertising. The lighting and the quality of the pictures was good, but the advertising agency thought the pictures looked kind of dull. I did a test retouch on a few pictures and they really liked it. I used the "Amazing details with blurring" tutorial, among other things, so these techniques are useful for real. |

Re: I share my photoshop techniques Except for painting in a curve layer to enchance the highlights just a liiiitle bit, these pics are made ONLY with steps from the Calvinized training tutorials. If I had more time I think I could easily work on more details, but I was on a clock and there were lots more pictures to fix. www.markusp.se/workshop01.jpg www.markusp.se/workshop02.jpg www.markusp.se/workshop03.jpg

Re: I share my photoshop techniques Thanks Calvin! Well actually, I didn't use anything else than what anyone can learn from your tutorials. I know about the halo, and as I wrote before, if I had more time I could have worked more on small details. But you know how it is, deadlines must be kept! Let's take workshop02.jpg for example: The main thing is the "Amazing details with blurring" tutorial, that's what gives the picture that special look. I copied the background layer, set it to Vivid light, inverted it and used a Surface blur filter. Maybe I used slightgly different settings than in your tutorial. I think you use about 40 on both Radius and Threshold in the tutorial. I think I used less on both sliders, about Radius 10 and Threshold 30 because it simply looked better on this particular image. The effect is less noticable when you use lower values, but I knew I could enhance the details later with local contrast. Then I merged the filtered layer and the background layer and set that new layer to Overlay (erased the Surface blur-filtered layer). I enhanched the details effect with Image -> Adjustments -> Local contrast to get even more details. The thing I added after that, which is very simple, was a curve layer where I painted the highlights. It's very easy to see where you should paint when you have done all of the above, because the highlights really stand out, but I wanted them even lighter. Next thing was a Vibrance adjustmentlayer to desature the colours all over the picture, except for the drilling machine in the guy's hand. I kept that detail fully saturated as a "colour-click". The final touch was a curve layer which I used to create a Vignette (darker corners). That's pretty much it!

Re: I share my photoshop techniques For future use I would say to mask the effect off an out of focus background, or else it kind of looks funky. And to go easier on it in areas with lots of highlights. It looks great on his hands, the tool, and the shadows of his face, but looks a little wrong where the skin is lighter, almost as if there's too much detail.

You just have to be careful with blacks, especially with lower end cameras, such as 6 - 10 Megapixel sensors. Going too high with the details and blurring can cause serious grain issues in the blacks and sometimes with color distortion. You can get rid of this by either a desaturated mask around those areas, or taking your opacity down to your liking like Calvin explained in his tutorial. Here is my 2Cents using my editing flow, mixed with Calvin's detail tutorial. http://www.fadewoodstudios.com/rebelyell.jpg Last edited by Fadewoodarts; 03-08-2010 at 01:17 PM.
