Recolouring - White to Black

I'm very much a novice at this kind of thing, but I've been trying to turn a white object black... tried all the tutorials and suggestions I could find, but still can't do it without losing all the definition.
I use Photoshop Elements, so I'm probably missing a few features.

Re: Recolouring - White to Black

First thing you need to realise is that black isn't necessarily black.
Inverting won't work really, as it will also invert all the shadows and look kinda weird.
I had to turn a white t shirt black recently, turned out pretty good.

I started out by using a colour fill adjustment layer, selectively masked to just the white shirt. The colour of the fill was very dark grey 1c1c1c, the opacity of the ADJ layer was knocked back a little to 77%, blend mode was set to linear burn. That was the starting point.

I then added a couple of levels and curves ADJ layers, to bring back the contrast and brighten the highlights on the creases a little more.

Welcome to RetouchPRO Hope you enjoy your stay here and make lots of friends.

A sample of what you are trying to convert would be helpful.

You can post a fairly large pictures which is under 100k using the save for web function as described here:
Size, Quality and/or Format your Attached Images.. (Click here)
This may also help some... How to attach Files/Images to your Posts or Threads?(Click here)

If you want to post a larger resolution that is over 100K then you can host your image on your own site or elsewhere and attach a link, but also please attach an under 100K version here (so the thread remains useful in the future, regardless of external links).
Alternative Image Hosts if you do not have your own site are: ImageVenue.com (3Meg max, free) or pixentral.com (2Meg max, free) or photobucket.com (1 Meg max free,... 5 Meg PRO) or mediafire.com (100 Meg per file) ... then post a link here in the thread to the site that is hosting your larger image.
