Using the gradient map to color stuff

On a thread here I read that some people use gradient map to color skin, and garments. I've used it and get the basics of the tool.
How ever, to my eye it doesn't make a BIG difference, compared to other methods. For example, when I'm retouching skin I normally have a solid color layer (with one of the skin colors) set to color and 40% opacity so when I'm using the D&B technique there is no difference in hue. I've tried to use a gradient map with the colors of the skin but haven't noticed any real difference.

Is there some method you have to do or is it just another way to skin a cat in photoshop? Is there any real advantage in using a gradient map for coloring?

Re: Using the gradient map to color stuff

First of all, I might not be the guy to answer this considering that I don't seem to do a lot of things the way on here seem to and I'm not sure if its me or them. Anyways, I use the gradient map really to tone an image, not so much color. It really helps to solidify an overbearing analogous color theme. If I wanted to color the skin or change the tones, I'd set a curve layer to color and adjust the R G B curves to shift tones and remember when you're increasing an R G B you're in a way adding more of that color to an image, but if you're decreasing one of those curves, don't think of it as taking away those colors, but you're adding their opposites I supposed cyan, magenta, and yellow respectively.

yeah as I said I use a solid color layer set to color for that purpose, but I want to know if there are any benefits of using the Gradient map for coloring (not toning)

well I wouldn't say it sucked, because yo tried to help. It just wasn't what I was looking for...
Thanks for the links 0lbaldy, I checked them out but its just the basics and that's what I've been doing. I still don't find anything that could make the gradient map better than other methods for coloring....
