If you use little strobes (like canon 580/430...) try out some Rosco sample, you can have it for free; while looking for a sheet of gel ask about a "sampler" (they come in little rectangle shape and hold together with a screw). Remove the screw and you have the biggest set of gels for strobes and they are the exact size of the strobes.
For testing it's great and free.

It was chaotic character of lighting with gels (in my case 1 blue filter, and 1 pink plastic bag )

That's quite long to describe so take a look at the mini .psd file:

that should guide you through the process, it's a bit messy in there but that's my approach in experimentation so take care .
Next one of this type would be much more rationalized I think.
