Retaining skin texture

I am sure this is a question that gets asked all the time and as a newbie I do apologise to all those of you that are sick of reading it...

I am trying to up the ante with my retouching skills and whilst I am pretty darn good with photoshop I cannot for the life of me figure out a method for retouching skin that will retain skin texture whilst still looking flawlessly smooth (such as in high end makeup adverts).

I have looked EVERYWHERE for tutorials regarding this matter and i was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. Any help would be gratefully received

Re: Retaining skin texture

What you're looking for is typically known as a Dodge & Burn technique. It's a broad church with a variety of different techniques to achieve the same end. It's usually a combination of techniques involving multiple layers.

To get you started look here

and here

Then sign up for the Chris Tarantino rebroadcast, where Chris shows a different method here

You can then look at the other rebroadcasts of sessions by Carrie Beene and Gry Garness for their methods.

Be aware, this takes time to get right, it's not something that you can learn and get right in 5 minutes, and it's a time consuming job, but very worthwhile.

And we all do it differently, everyone had their own variation on the methods and techniques they've picked up over the years.

Just remember, Dodge & Burn technique is time consuming, don't give up on it. The results are worth the time investment.
