How to make a difference mask?

I'm trying some new stuff out and it says to create a difference mask to adjust certain mid tones. Googled it and could find any thing so I thought I would ask on here. Any one know?

Re: How to make a difference mask?

Corey, a Difference Mask is a mask or grayscale image which is made by taking the difference between two images or two channels in the same image or in different images. There are a number of ways to create a difference mask. Here are two examples.
1. If you want a difference mask from to composite images, copy and paste one image on top of the other. Set the blend mode of the top image to Difference. Make a duplicate of the image and desaturate it or convert it to grayscale. This grayscale image represents the differences between the two images and can be used as a mask.
2. To make a difference mask of two channels go to the channels palette and select one channel. The go Image>Apply Image. From the pull down menu select you current image or any other open image. Choose the layer you want and change the Blend Mode to Difference. The new channel will be immediately useable as a s difference mask.

Re: How to make a difference mask?

If you are trying to adjust mid-tones ... Luminosity masks might be a good choice.. they are explained here: Tony Kuyper Photography (luminosity masks tutorial)

Amica has made and provided an action that contains almost all of the luminosity masks and can be downloaded from here: RetouchPRO>Blogs>amica999
