It needs lot of work. I'm also an amateur and I spent about 2 days doing a full retouch, something like 40 hours. Of course, most experienced retouchers do the same thing in 8 or less, but my latest retouching took me 20 hours and the work I did was much more intensive thn other jobs: http://quantum3studio.daportfolio.com/gallery/111332#2 so I'm clearily developing my workflow.

Let me point what's wrong in what you did.

The legs looks quite dry, there is a big stain of shadow in each leg, around the knee and, let say, the femur area. (you can use the even tones from the original or doing some D&B).

It needs an overall liquify like refining legs, hip and waist.

Urgently needed cloning in legs and foot/feeth.

Urgent color correction in the shadows (they look green, but green!).

You need to even colors and tones. (Use a gradient Map set to color and chose proper colors from skintone after color correcting them by using curves, channels and CMYK numbers and some D&B/Highpass).

Taking out some of the wrinkles in her dress too, specially the one which cross along her. (clone/D&B).

You have a thin white line in the base of her dress due sharpening that should be not there.

Removing all the crumpled surface of the background (HighPass).

Basically, you can start by fixing these issues, then doing some improvements/painting some lights (specially in the background).

Wow man, you did a great job with this pic. You improve quite fast

However, the skin looks blotchy and irregular, specially in the neck and chest/breast. You need to degrunge the whole skin following this tut: http://retouchpro.com/tutorials/?m=show&id=213 . Apply this tutorial over the image you already done, I think it will work (but consider you have not enough pores on this pic, you may need to apply HP in the original and blend it with this one, I mean, apply HP to the original and to this one and blend those together in order to achieve texture from the original and "smoothness" from the edited one).

I applyed some HP but it looks too smoothed, you will need the orignal picture, definitely...

By the way, the palm of her hand looks grey/blue/violet at first glance and her ear too red and dark.

Re: Yours ideas for retouching my photo

fyi: the sweet spot of the 50mm 1.8 EF is at f/5.6
the lens is dirt-cheap but good and quite sharp
