Wowing a boring color photo

hello... i wanted to give this photo as a present to my grandparents. but, it's boring colorwise. they're 92 so i don't want to freak their freak. at the same time, i was hoping to modernize or improve this photo some way.

any ideas?

It would be nice to see a really nice watercolor rendering.
Some on this forum are very good at that.

Edit: Yes, MiningArt is right about bluring the background.
So I edited thumbnail example with same.

I created selective coloring and set desaturate.

most creative in helping me to get out of my box a little... i can play with the watercolor rendering from the impressionist plugin to see if i have any luck ~ thanks for the tip/lead on that. somehow when it's your own photo, it seems harder to break out of the mold. thx again!

I thought the image was to noisy, so I blurred the background and simplified just a little. Also made a focal point and adjusted the image a bit. Finished up with adding a little colored random grain.

I resized photo from 408 x 504 to 810 x 1000.

I edited soft photo
Neat Image is Noise Reduction program
Vibrance
Duplicate layer
Blending change = Multiply = Master Opacity change 55 %
Flatten Image

just wanted to thank everyone for their input. i tried all (i think) of the suggestions and ended up going back to an earlier attempt using the impressionist filter. your suggestions helped me improve that and the focusing of the people was a great suggestion. thx for your help
