Re: Jewellery Retouch

I would avoid the gray reflection...
edit: or rather the holes in the ring on the near side are gray now

Re: Jewellery Retouch

Dear KeithWilson...

This is a pretty good first attempt, but it has some problems. The shadows around the chain look painted in. You need to determine the direction of the light and then figure out where the surface is that everything is laying on. If you're going to have shadows, they need to make sense in the image. If there not realistic and consistent, they'll make the whole image look fake. THe best place to look for the shadow placement is in the original image. But if you're going to change the shadow for the ring you need to figure out what that does for the chain. And often you'll end up spending as much time on the shadows as on the rest of the image. The diamonds are lacking in contrast and seem monochomatic (light gray with flecks of white) -- they need some darks and hints of color for their sparkly white to shine. Yes I can see that the original is already lacks punch in the diamond department. As a retoucher you'll have to become inventive.

Good luck with that. Take care. Alan.

Re: Jewellery Retouch

intindakiss, quantum3, seattle-light - thanks for the reply and the vote of confidence.

I do agree about the shadows but I'm afraid that's what the customer wanted, they simply didnt like the shadows as if the light was coming from camera left entirely. Point taken though.

I did put a 2% blue overlay across the stones and it improved them greatly but again you are right about this.

I could do with a tutorial on producing seamless, blemish free metals (gold, silver). This piece was, thankfully, relatively blemish and scratch free. Anyone know of, or prepared to post, a blow-by-blow tut on retouching jewellery ? Tutorials on this are impossible to find.

Cheers

Keith
