How do I get rid of dark circles under eyes?

I've been looking for a good way to retouch dark circles under eyes. I've done this with a curves adjustment layer but I find that when the circles are rather significant that using curves often begins to alter to tonality of the skin rather than just lightening.

What is the preferred method for doing this?

Here is a cropped example of circles that don't respond well to a curves adjustment layer.

Do a search for "Dodge and Burn" or "D&B" in the retouching forum, and you will see various solutions.

I did that but I don't see anything that specifically address this problem? When I dodge using a curves adjustment layer I'm not getting natural looking results if the dark circles are too dark.

try putting a blank layer on top blend color and paint with a low opacity the desired skintone. Hope this helps

or try belending the curbes layer in luminosity

I make a duplicate layer, use the clone tool and
mode; lighten
opacity; 80
flow; 25
sample area which is right under and clone.I like to leave texture so I do the high pass layer technique and it brings back texture to the skin.

Thank you. Can you explain what you mean by the high pass layer technique?

Smile Re: How do I get rid of dark circles under eyes?

I make 3 layers:
background, and 2 duplicate layers
top layer:
filter:other:highpass
opacity 3.3 (or so) click ok
you will see a gray layer
change layer menu to "overlay"
I turn off that layer while I work on the middle layer and do all the work
I turn back on the top (highpass layer)
make a black layer mask
paint with white, the areas you want to bring out texture/sharpness
and adjust opacity if necessary in the layer menu

I have this sequence as an action so each time I work on faces
it goes a lot faster.
This has worked for me for years, there may be an easier way now but
its hard for old dogs to learn new tricks...well, not really..but if it isnt broke
blablabla...

Cool. How do you determine the width in pixels for the high pass filter? Or where you've indicated 3.3 as opacity, did you mean width?

Re: How do I get rid of dark circles under eyes?

the 3.3 is the radius when the high pass filter is applied
not sure where "width" comes in??
(again this is a duplicate of your background)
