Help with XMP files

Forgive me if this has been covered before. I have just started shooting in raw and converting my photos. I am using an Olympus E-510 and Photoshop Elements 8. I have noticed that in the processing of my shots the program develops a separate file (XMP) and saves it along with my original raw file and the new jpg. Questions? Can I do something so as to not develop these files? Do I need them? If so what for? Is there a setting in Photoshop raw5.5 that saves the data in a different way?

Any help would be appreciated as they are getting annoying and I have a lot of them by now.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Don

Re: Help with XMP files

XMP files contains all the data you "applied" to the RAW File. All the changes you apply to any RAW file will be written up into the XMP File. If you delete or change the location of this file, all the changes you applyed in the RAW File will also be reset/deleted. If you want to keep the changes you applyed to your RAW Files, you must keep the XMP Files into the same folder wehre you store your RAWs. For example, if you burn your RAWs to a DVD, you must put the XMPs in the same folder with your RAWs and burnt it. That way, when you open the RAWs, they will load all the changes you applied to them.
