Another technique you could look into using is luminocity masksing.
Can you reccomend any such books that cover the shadows in depth?

How is this book? Specifically how much detail does it go into in regards to shadows?

If you understand all the following concepts as well as a solid understanding of Photoshop/ACR, you'll be a MASTER retoucher. I promise you that. I'm still working on the concepts in the third tutorial and I probably will be for many more years.

1- Color theory: http://www.worqx.com/color/index.htm
2- Composition: http://features.cgsociety.org/story_...id=3275&page=1
3- Light/rendering http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm#the_onion
4- Learn anatomy

Btw great link chillin. I hadn't seen that one
