How do I get crisp clean photos like this?

I have been playing around with my lighting, but this camera is super new to me. I would like to get really vivid colors and a crisp, clean look like this; any advice? I have a Nikon d200. I am sure I will need to do some in photoshop as well. The first photo is what I want mine to look like, and the second is what mine does look like.

Just some photoshop brightening, contrast and sharpening adjustments will get you closer to the look you want.

Thanks. What I do not understand is why my photo just blows to pieces when I zoom in; it is real grainy. What sort of lighting do I need to make this not happen, and can I fix that in photoshop?

Is this like a layering thing? I know there has to be some way to make it look less grainy.

I agree PS will get you closer, but how close do you want to be?

Your photo needs some light from the right direction. You have too much light from the top and back.

I suggest that you google portrait lighting and start reading.

Re: How do I get crisp clean photos like this?

Are you taking pictures in jpg or RAW? If you are using a D200 you really should be shooting in RAW and processing your images from there, preferably with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. Learning how to make adjustments to the image in the Adobe Camera Raw module of either of those programs will allow you to create sharp clean images.
Not sure what you mean when you say grainy when you zoom in. This sound like it might be noise (color or luminance). This is often the result of images shot at high ISO. Check your camera settings. Increasing the amount of light or setting the ISO to a lower value on your D200 may resolve the problem. If you wan to post a high res image (as taken by your camera and unmodified by you) we can look at it for you to verify if your images are noisy.
Regards, Murray

I am shooting them in RAW & jpg at same time, but I edit from RAW in PS CS3. Yes, I will post a high res one now. I will try to do it in this thread, but if not, I will post in another thread.
