Remove/Replace Background

Hi:
I am in need of help. I am slowly studying the beginnings of retouching. I had a month's subscription to Lynda.com and was able to get an idea about some of the fundamentals. But I could really use some help here. This is my football team's photo that I need to remove/replace the background with a more attractive, appealing background. I shot this on a last minute request and now I need to print them for the kids before Christmas.
I would really appreciate assistance here. Typically I would not ask for it and try to figure it out, but it is a special occasion for them and I am down to the wire w/ work.

I am not sure how to upload the full size version here directly so with permission I posted the full version on my work's ftp server. If you are interested in helping you can email me for login and password.

Thank you very much,

Doug

Re: Remove/Replace Background

Hi, Doug! Welcome to RetouchPro! Explore and Enjoy!

Time to break out the pen tool or quick mask. I would leave the grass and remove the parking lot (a lot less work than trying to mask out the grass around those helmets etc.).

Doug,

the tutorials you want to watch at Lynda.com are the ones on masking Are you working with Photoshop? There are masking plugins (like fluid mask) that could make your job easier. HTH

Re: Remove/Replace Background

Thank you both.
So masking is the key? And then finding a suitable background?

Doug

I am working w/ PS, CS3. I have just started with masks and have fundamental idea about how they work. I will begin with them and see how I do and will post back for further advice.

Thanks,

Doug

Re: Remove/Replace Background

Welcome, Doug.

I 2nd what Swampy suggested and consider removing/cloning over the parking lot with grass instead of trying to isolate the helmets, players, coaches and other edges-centric details.
Some creative cloning of the grass to cover the parking lot may be a more suitable approach.

If your intent is to completely remove them from the scene and place them, say, before a mountain range or something like that, then masking may be the way to go - it is non-destructive and allows you to fine-tune the edging without losing the desired subject matter.

Re: Remove/Replace Background

Here is my first attempt at replacing the background. I would appreciate feedback and critiques. This was in the goal of removing the parking lot and rusty soccer goal and replace it with a more fitting theme.

Thanks,

doug

Doug,
Wow, I think you did a great job, especially on your first attempt! What techniques did you use?

Re: Remove/Replace Background

Thanks Shortybee!
Well... I used masking layer and cloning. I had a shot of a goal post from another shoot and extracted that and continually cloned the trees into the background to hopefully blend it altogether.
I am hoping that there are no visible voids or clone marks, won't know for sure until it gets printed.
Any critiques on how it might be done better I am open....

Thanks again

doug

Re: Remove/Replace Background

I'm a huge fan of the background eraser, but it's a tricky tool to master.
