Re: The skin in my edits looks pasty and grey

...and finally my two edits. First where I have gone for the full whack, and secondly where I have tried to put some of Cuervo's suggestions into practice, using layer masks to pull back, and make her skin more normal and everyday looking. More suitable for a candid.

Canna, you're still leaving things in the skin..
Don't leave the cleaning up to just techniques, do a thorough cleaning via the healing and clone tools.

I must be driving you nuts! Thank you so much for that. I have done what you suggested, hopefully with some improvement.... Before and after below. Whoops, no, can only upload the after...

You left some weird looking wrinkles on her throat (weird compared to the rest of her faces which is overall smooth).
But much better than the first ones :-).

Thanks for that feedback Jonas - I've learnt so much with this thread! Neck now de-wrinkled.....

You could as well consider darkening her neck a little so it doesn't look like she had a double chin (just an impression I got after looking at the picture again ;-)).

Hi Jonas - now this I found quite challenging. Hope it is reasonably realistic... Thanks for the feedback!

I have been following this thread for a couple of days, and I think you did some great progress on a snapshot that's worth what it is. I also tried to retouch snapshots from sxc, but gave up because of the quality of shots. I believe no matter what you do, you can only make them look a little better, but not great. With this picture so many things are wrong that it would take miracles to make it go anywhere like glamour: the lighting, the perspective, the many fly-away-hairs all over, the missing hairs at some parts, the hair roots which needs a hairdresser so bad, missing pigments on the lips...I guess, you get the point. I would suggest you go to look for some hi-res images from a (semi-)professional photographer and save yourself a lot of time! Here are some threads worth looking at:

Please don't misunderstand Just trying to be helpful
Oh and on the neck darkening your mask on the edge looks a little off

Hi Amica - thank you so much for that! I really appreciate you taking the time to give me that level of feedback and the links

There are 2 different issues here. Firstly, nearly all my retouching is done for a group at flickr called "Fix My Pic" - and the general quality of most of the pix is not good. I really like this group though, and what it sets out to do - so improving my technique with low end retouching is a priority. Secondly, I would love to get better at retouching generally. Getting to 'see' better and catch my mistakes, as well as improve and learn new techniques....and for that I totally understand your point about needing a good class of pix to work with.

I checked out the threads you sent me links for... Very interesting to see edits and read the crits. Sadly all the links in the second one are broken - so those models aren't available any more, but I will try with the first one. (A lot on my plate at the right now, but will try over the next few days when I have time...)

Thank you! It is indeed. Will rectify that now.
