What is the best way to deal with this gentleman's red, blotchy skin?

Toning. Selective color, hue/sat.
Then heal he whole face, plus D&B id you're looking for a pristine result.

One option is to use a curves layer to match the red skin with the normal skin, then mask it out and paint back in where necessary using a low-opacity brush. That way you can build it up little by little and achieve great results.

That's one option, but the best one is to make a proper conversion from the raw.

Yeah open in ACR, go to the hue's and move the red slider towards orange.

Re: Dealing with red blotchy skin?

There are a lot of ways to deal with this. I have had many head shots of what appear to be heavy drinkers. This guy doesn't look as bad as that though, I would try sampling a pleasing skintone somewhere on his face and then using a brush set to "color" with an opacity of 50%, paint over the red areas. They may still appear darker or lighter than the rest of the skintones, but once you get the hue correct you can Burn and Dodge them to blend nicely with the rest.

Doesn't always work, like I said, it's usually on an image by image basis, but worth a shot.

Sometimes I Burn and Dodge first, then worry about the hue afterwards.

Hope this helps.

Hello Kevin!

Assuming you want to keep the rest of the colors of this image as much as possible:
Easiest way would be to simply reduce the cyan channel on the skin with a smoothed mask around the face. This can be done with some very simple steps.

PS: I made this with PhotoImpact because I actually like the simplicity and intuitivity of that program. It can be done with Photoshop as well. The amount of reducing the cyan channel could be adjusted just more of course but I think the result shouldn't be too drastic.

Re: Dealing with red blotchy skin?

I think, I made another small improvement with the foto by optimizing the light, giving the entire photograph a little more depth and and emphasizing the face.

The guy is still red. Try playing with hue/sat a little bit more. But don't just desaturade reds in general - subtract color from his face with color picker. That'll do the trick.
