Dodge and Burn help

Hello,

I apologize if this has been asked a lot before, but, I have been reading a lot about how dodge and burn is the best technique for evening out skin tones and retouching faces and such. I have been trying to figure out this technique however, i never get good results. I was just wondering what some peoples work flow is for this technique or any tips really that would help a beginner.

Thanks
