Best way to replace color

So I've been asked to change the color of this pushpin to something akin to PMS 151 (RGB 247/127/0)... I tried using a variety of techniques (replace color, HSL layer, curves + mask, inverting channels in LAB mode, etc.) but none were satisfactory.

What do you think is the best way to perform such a task? The image is for an email newsletter and is the same size/quality as is uploaded here.

Re: Best way to replace color

Best, I don't know. Down and dirty, try this.

Make a selection of the pushpin. (I'd use the pen tool and feather slightly when converting to a selection.) Click on the color picker and set your RGB values, thus making your foreground color your target color. Add a blank layer, fill selection with foreground color and set layer blend mode to your preference of Hue or Color.

Re: Best way to replace color

I would select the part you want to change, in this case, the pin, and desaturate it. On a new layer, keeping your selection, fill with desired color and set the layer blend mode to "Overlay." Voila.

Re: Best way to replace color

Normally when changing to a specific Pantone color I would select the object and make the adjustments with a curve adj layer in LAB. However, the blue pin in this image has a lot of bad stuff going on in it - luminosity range from almost zero to almost white with uneven shading. So in this case I am with OlBaldy, that the fastest, most efficient solution is to use a gradient map adj layer to control the color range. With a Gradient Map you can access the Pantone and other color librairies from the dialog box and you have hugh flexibility in the color range across the gradient. The automatic layer mask also allows you to tweak the selection or refine the edge. Another example attached using slightly different colors and placement than OlBaldy. There's right or wrong map - it's whatever looks pleasing and meets your customer's color window.
Regards, Murray

Re: Best way to replace color

To create a good mask you can subtract the red channel from the blue. Blur it a little and then Fade > Lighten to taste.
