How best to remove unwanted color casts ?

Hi there, I am new to retouch pro and I'm Thomass. I sometimes struggle to achieve the desired results with color correction. For example a problem I regularly encounter is having to remove tungsten light casts from images. I will combat this by using either selective color and going into the yellow channel and removing yellow or by using a hue sat layer and again going into the yellow channel and reducing the yellow saturation ( on a saturation blending mode) I will then paint in a color using the eye picker and brushes onto a empty color layer and pull back the opacity to give some variation. I find this technique not perfect and was hoping someone might be able to share some good color correction techniques for removing unwanted color casts from images.

Many thanks

Thomass

I have a video tutorial on a simple method to reduce color casts (Blur Away the Color Cast). You can build an action to run it if you have lots of images to process. It does the bulk of the work, but some images may require further tweaking.

That's why you should shoot raw.

I do shoot raw and I do color balance. However the balance is never completely uniform and a comprimise at some level is made. Some areas will remain warmer than others. These areas are the ones I have trouble with such as the heavy light reflection off an object.

Re: How best to remove unwanted color casts ?

You could use two conversions of your RAW files and mask the second (corrected warmer tones) with a selection of LAB's b-channel (exaggerate the luminosity differences with curves). That will just select areas of much blue/yellow and fall of as the color gets more neutral.

But an example would probably help even more :-)!

Are you geling your flashes? For color correct images you should try to bring all your light sources closer together in temperature.
